About the shadow fleet
Russia's shadow fleet is the several hundred ageing tankers that carry Russian oil around
Western price caps and sanctions — often with opaque ownership, flags of convenience and no
cover from the established P&I clubs. From Primorsk, Ust-Luga and St Petersburg they sail
through the Gulf of Finland, past Gotland and out through the Danish straits and Skagen.
Fyrvakt matches live AIS positions against public sanctions and shadow fleet lists and shows
transits through the straits, calls at the Russian oil ports, and anomalies such as AIS gaps,
meetings at sea (possible ship-to-ship transfers), implausible draught and MMSI changes.
A listing means the vessel appears on a public sanctions or shadow fleet list —
not that Fyrvakt has established any wrongdoing.
Positions come from AIS and may be wrong, delayed or missing.
